WARTIME MEMORIES OF KNOTTINGLEY
Helping to preserve the memory of the men and women from Knottingley and
Ferrybridge
who served their country during wartime
'When you go home,
Tell them of us and say
For their tomorrow
We gave our today'
While focusing primarily on the two World Wars, our 'Wartime Memories' section aims to tell the stories behind all those people from our region who served their country during wartime.
War affects not only those who take up active duty, but also the families and friends they leave behind. Families are torn apart, loved ones are lost and whatever your views on the cause for our country to go to war there can be no experience more shattering.
The loss of
loved ones is a devastating experience for any family and yet in the
context of war it is
considered an acceptable price to pay in pursuit of peace and
world stability.
Many
thousands of lives have been lost in the never-ending quest for peace and
for those people from this region who paid the ultimate sacrifice, 'Wartime
Memories' hopes to be able to preserve their memory and to recognise the
efforts of the men and women who supported the cause closer to home.
War has not
been confined to the early part of the 20th century. There are young men
and women among us today who have experienced the brutality of war at
first hand in the beginning of the 21st century. The efforts of all those
who have been asked to serve their country should be recognised, as
should the support given by their families and friends.
I hope that this can serve as a lasting memorial to all those people
who have, in one way or another, contributed to our countries war
efforts.
